Beach textures

The more I do this blog the more I seem to be drawn to detail and texture.

Looking at these pictures I didn't realise that the beach at Charlestown had several different shades if orange but that's what I like about looking at the detail.

It been a while...

As I have not posted in a while I have decided on a little game to play when imagination runs dry.

If I haven't posted for a week I will post an image of the closest thing to hand.

Panorama

It seems like most of my posts are using pictures from my mobile phone, and this one is no excepion. There is something great about simple panoramic photographs. These are all from a recent holiday to the South East of Spain.

Over the next couple of weeks i will try and post some more adventurous ones.

Festival Denia

Another time when I wish I had better equipment with me than my phone. We chanced across this festival when going out for some dinner tonight.

Hide and seek

A and I had a wee walk out to the local headland yesterday and came across this little fella trying to hide from us.

A quick trip to the library

Trowbridge's new library is brilliant, both educationally and architecturally. This was the best I could do with a toddler and a camera phone.

Hockney

Last night I watched a brilliant documentary with David Hockney called "Hockney on photography and other things", during which Hockney spoke about his photography techniques, tips and stories behind his images.

I have always liked his cubist inspired photographic collages which really explore perspective in photography more for what they are trying to achieve than how they actually look. For me they look a bit scruffy and need a nice tight crop on them to make the look finished.

What I hadn't seen before was his polaroid composite pieces where a larger image is made up up lots of closely shot and tighly cropped polaroid images and I think they are absolutely breathtaking.

These two are, in my opinion, his strongest pieces and what i think is some brilliant about them is when you take the time explore each picture they each have their own compostion, perspective and story. Yet they have been taken with an overall composition and story in mind and our brains have to compensate for the perspective changes.

Time to get myself a polaroid camera and try to get close to recreating something as special as these I think!

Trainspotting

What happens if you have a 30 minute train journey, nothing to read and a camera phone?

Say cheese! [actually, say cakes!]

When a friend asked me to take some pictures for her new cake business I didn't hesistate to say yes, but then the fear set in. What if they end up looking like diy snaps, what if I get the style wrong, what if I set the camera wrong and waste the whole day with blurred shots etc!

Anyway, a couple of weeks of worry later it is all done and thankfully I pulled it off. The 'client' was very happy and I actually quite enjoyed the process :)

It was my first real attempt at doing reportage when the last cake was being decorated and trying to set each cake differently certainly stretched my imagination but anyway the proof of the pudding is in the eating [sorry], so here are a couple of pictured from the day

P.S. The payment method of cupcakes [the ones in the pictures] was gratefully received by all of us four, even if A could only look at them!
